Dictamnus Flower art print | By Print Room Ltd

This watercolour depicting the vibrant Fraxinella (Dictamnus albus), also known as the burning bush or gas plant due to its flammable oil secretion, is part of an extensive collection of botanical and zoological illustrations by the renowned still life artist Balthasar van der Ast. Originally, this collection included over 483 pieces, each meticulously labelled in Dutch with the name of the depicted subject, adorned with the "BA" monogram, and numbered (with the number 214 on this piece being obscured by a small paper overlay at the bottom left). These artworks (71 of which reside in the Frits Lugt Collection in Paris) were previously misattributed to the Dordrecht artist Bartholomeus Assteyn (1607-ca. 1667). However, Michiel Plomp's 2001 analysis confirmed Van der Ast's authorship, evidenced by the exceptional quality and the similarities between some of these drawings and Van der Ast's paintings.
