    • Description

      Black Stork in a Landscape

      circa 1780

This artwork captures the unique appearance of the Woolly-Necked Stork (Ciconia episcopus), distinguished by its striking white neck plumage, purple-streaked wings, and a hint of red on its beak. The depicted winding waterway to the right suggests the stork's natural riverine habitats, yet the landscape's portrayal bears a unique signature style, indicative of a broader collection of avian art. This collection, possibly exceeding 600 pieces, is believed to have been commissioned by Claude Martin, the superintendent of the arsenal under Nawab Asaf ud-Daula of Lucknow from 1775 to 1800, highlighting a significant period of artistic patronage in the UK's colonial history.
